Active Speed Control
Active Speed Control refers to a vehicle system that automatically adjusts the speed of a vehicle based on real-time data from its surroundings.
The SSC system does not brake or tie into the vehicles braking system.
SSC does not provide the “alert” but adjust speed on the “alert condition” within the application.
Unlike traditional cruise control, which maintains a constant speed, SSC’s Active Speed Control for many of MHE industry dynamically adapts:
- Responding to pedestrians
- Responding to vehicles
- Objects are detected as well
- Machines can be detected
Core Technologies Involved
🔍 1. Radar Sensors
- Function: Detects objects and measures their distance and relative speed.
- Types: Short-range (for work areas), mid-range (blind spot detection), long-range (adaptive speed control).
- Strengths: Works in poor visibility (rain, fog, darkness).
📸 2. Cameras
- Function: Recognizes markings, some types of signs, pedestrians, and vehicles.
- Types: Up to 360-degree surround view.
- AI Role: learning models classify objects and pedestrians and predicts movement.
📡 3. LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging)
- Function: Creates high-resolution 3D maps of surroundings.
- Strengths: Excellent for object detection and distance measurement.
- Limitations: Expensive and sensitive to weather.
📶 4. UWB (Ultra-Wideband) Radar
- Function: Detects fine movements like breathing or gestures.
- Use Case: In-cabin monitoring, child presence detection, and even exterior object sensing.
- AI Role: Embedded algorithms interpret signal reflections to detect presence and motion.
🧠 5. AI & Sensor Fusion
- Function: Combines data from all sensors to make intelligent decisions.
- Capabilities:
- Predict pedestrian intent (e.g., crossing the road)
- Recognize traffic patterns
- Adjust speed based on context (e.g., school zones, traffic jams)
