Trans-Stop ™ Brake Transmission Shift Interlock

Protect Your Fleet, Prevent Drivetrain Damage, and Ensure Operator Safety.

The Safety Systems & Controls (SSC) Trans-Stop™ is the industry standard for preventing costly transmission failures and ensuring equipment safety. Whether you manage a fleet of forklifts, heavy trucks, or specialized delivery vehicles, our patented system offers the ultimate protection against operator error and equipment misuse.

Main Functions

Safety Systems & Controls' (SSC) patented TRANS-STOP™ system can be set up to be a transmission Shift Inhibitor, a transmission Interlock, or both.

Shift Inhibitor

As a Shift Inhibitor, TRANS-STOP™ requires the operator to apply service brake pressure to stop (or nearly stop) the vehicle prior to shifting the transmission to change vehicle direction. This prevents transmission, driveline, and drive axle shock load failures that occur when a driver shifts incorrectly while a vehicle is still moving.

Transmission Interlock

As an Interlock, TRANS-STOP™ mechanically locks the transmission in Park or Neutral until all monitored switches are in a 'Safe' position. For instance, on a special needs school bus, the transmission locks when the wheelchair door opens, and on a bucket truck, when the boom leaves the cradle. Both vehicles can not be shifted into a drive gear until those apparatuses are stowed properly.

Best of Both Worlds

TRANS-STOP™ can be set up to be both a transmission Shift Inhibitor and an Interlock on the same vehicle. Take, for instance, an airline flight kitchen truck. TRANS-STOP™ prevents shock load damage during normal drive situations and acts as an Interlock when the truck bed is raised to service the aircraft.

Universal

TRANS-STOP™ mounts externally on the transmission and is available on a wide range of equipment. It is also important to note that the TRANS-STOP™ electrical installation does NOT intrude into the existing OEM wiring.

What Is a Brake Transmission Shift Interlock System?

A brake transmission shift interlock system is a safety mechanism designed to prevent a vehicle from shifting gears unless specific safety conditions are met. The Trans-Stop™ system is unique because it serves a dual purpose: it can be configured as a Shift Inhibitor, a Transmission Interlock, or a combination of both.

Why Your Fleet Needs a Brake Transmission Shift Interlock

Incorrect shifting remains a leading cause of transmission, driveline, and axle failures in industrial vehicles. These failures often happen in seconds but lead to expensive downtime and safety risks.

A brake transmission shift interlock reduces those risks by enforcing proper operating behavior automatically. Operators cannot shift unless braking conditions are met or monitored equipment is in a safe position. This protects both the vehicle and the people working around it.

Fleets benefit from:

  • Reduced maintenance costs
  • Longer drivetrain life
  • Fewer operator-induced failures
  • Improved compliance with safety procedures

For environments with mixed skill levels or high operator turnover, a physical safety system provides consistency that policies alone cannot achieve.

Key Features of a Transmission Interlock System

A well-designed transmission interlock system must work reliably across different vehicles and duty cycles. Trans-Stop™ is engineered to meet those demands without interfering with OEM wiring or vehicle electronics.

Key features include:

  • External mounting directly on the transmission
  • Mechanical locking for positive shift prevention
  • Configurable operation as a shift inhibitor, interlock, or both
  • Compatibility with multiple monitored switches and sensors
  • No intrusion into factory wiring harnesses

Because the system operates externally, installation remains simple and service-friendly. This design also makes it suitable for a wide range of equipment, from warehouse vehicles to specialty fleet applications.

Benefits of Using Trans-Stop Transmission Interlock

Trans-Stop™ combines flexibility with durability, making it suitable for many real-world use cases.

Key benefits include:

  • Prevents shock load damage during direction changes
  • Locks transmission when critical equipment is deployed
  • Supports multiple vehicle configurations
  • Works without modifying OEM electrical systems
  • Improves overall fleet safety culture

Because the brake transmission shift interlock system can function as both a shift inhibitor and an interlock, fleets get protection during normal driving and during specialized operations like loading, lifting, or servicing.
